Training
Our main training programme is based on the Proficiency
Training Scheme published by Headquarters Air Cadets at RAF College
Cranwell. This
lays down
an
outline plan covering at least the first two years of a cadet's service yet
still leaves plenty of scope for individual development and local initiatives.
In
addition to the proficiency training we also operate a wide range of other
activities. Flying training in powered aircraft (The Grob Tutor and
Vigilant glider) take place at least twice each term and cadets are encouraged
to bid for Gliding Scholarships, Flying Scholarships and Air Cadet Navigation Scholarships
with all of which we have a great deal of success. Typically, more
than half the section will have at least one set of wings by the time they
leave us.
Radio
and communications training is another major activity. We were the
first CCF unit to adopt this new scheme and are still the premier unit for
it. Cadets
learn many aspects of communications and provide support for local charitable
events whenever possible.
Shooting is the second most popular cadet
activity throughout the Air Cadets and we offer more opportunities than the
majority of other units. All cadets are trained to a very high standard
in the safe handling of our rifles and have the opportunity to practice many
different disciplines and compete at all levels in the sport.
On top of all
this there are camps, courses, adventurous training, night exercises and
a wealth of other activities for cadets to take part in. Something
like 600 cadet days of training off-site in a good year.
